September 15th doesn’t mark the end of the Battle of Britain, but on this day 75 years ago the German Luftwaffe launched their largest offensive against London.
The conflict continued until October. But today, due to its symbolic importance, is the official Battle of Britain day. As such, the biggest contingent of Second World War era planes will take to the skies to commemorate what is widely perceived to be a pivotal point in the war.
Taking off from the Goodwood Aerodrome, the flypast will include Spitfires, Hurricanes and Blenheims and will take a path directly over us here at Loddon Brewery, between one and quarter past one.
95 year old Battle of Britain Wing Commander Tom Neill will lead the formation from the rear seat of a Spitfire, as veterans of the conflict are joined by a host of spectators from across the country.
A fitting tribute to such a prominent point in British history and we have attempted to create our own salute to the airmen and women in the form of our Scramble beer.
Those who served during the conflict risked everything to protect our nation and truly represent the best of British and we hope Scramble, a 4.4% Best Bitter, is a befitting testament to their courage and service.
Five pence from every bottle of Scramble sold will go to the RAF Benevolent Fund. The RAF Benevolent Fund is a charity which still cares for members of the RAF family today, just as they have since their 1919 foundation.
The charity serves all current and former members of the RAF and dependent children and partners too. Spending £18 million supporting 60,000 members in 2013 alone, the RAF Benevolent Fund does incredible work considering it does not receive any government funding.
So any money raised through Scramble is going to a great cause and every detail of the beer has been carefully planned to create the ultimate RAF tribute. From the traditional recipe used in the brewing to the Airfix painting on the label and the RAF Benevolent Fund Roundel on the crown, we hope that this beer pays due reference to those it aims to support. So raise a glass to the ‘few’ tonight in appreciation of their sacrifice and bravery.
Loddon’s continued commitment to support such endeavours is also evident in our recent sponsorship of the RAF Benson Rugby Team. Loddon have provided the team with brand new home and away kits; we hope it pushes them on to victory!
